And in the salon and spa industry, understanding the leadership style for your job is essential for running your business properly. For example, as a spa manager you need to be able to communicate well with guests, staff and suppliers.

A salon and spa need a leader who is a jack of all trades. Someone with the determination and energy to motivate staff, drive critical numbers, manage cash flow, all while maintaining standards and systems.

Understanding the different leadership styles in the salon and spa industry is crucial. A salon and spa leadership program will help you understand the leadership styles that should be added to your collection. Of the five leadership styles we will discuss, which one do you recognize in yourself the most?

Leadership Style 1: Authoritative Leadership

Authoritative leaders are concerned with the long-term direction of the business. If you have a “firm but fair” mentality, you may be an authoritative leader.

This leadership style imparts elements of persuasion, clear expectations and explanations, and clear consequences for failed tasks. All this happens while the leader still examines employee feedback and communication.

Of all the leadership styles, this one is perfect for restructuring a failing salon or spa.

Leadership Style 2: Structural Leadership

In this leadership style, all the employees understand what needs to be done, and to what standards. In structural leadership, you put all your faith in the employees which you have already chosen and assigned different tasks. The employees also understand the consequences of sub-standard work.

In salon and spa leadership, structural leadership allows you to make quick decisions without the input of others. This style is especially useful if the team you have is already motivated and are experts that need little attention.

If this sounds like the employees you have, then this might be the style for you.

Leadership Style 3: Participative Leadership

Participative leadership is the best for team morale. This leadership style thrives by collaboration between the management and staff of your salon or spa. Under this system, the whole team is involved in the decision-making process.

The participative leadership style is not the best for hard financial times in your salon and spa. However, it tends to make the team feel valued in their work. This leadership style is perfect for when the morale of the team is low. It can get you good results, but at the same time slow down the solution making process.

As a salon and spa leader, you need to identify the best time to use this leadership style.

Leadership Style 4: Laissez-Faire Leadership

If you’ve ever taken a French class, you might recall that the term “laissez-faire” translates to “let them do.”

Salon and spa leaders who embrace this style give almost all of the authority to their employees. It is one of the least intrusive leadership styles because there are no significant office policies surrounding work hours or deadlines.

Although this leadership style can empower employees to think on their own, it can limit their development. A laissez-faire leadership style may also overlook critical company growth opportunities for your spa and salon.

Leadership Style 5: Coach Style Leadership

This leadership style gives you a role similar to that of a sports coach. This leadership style involves identifying and nurturing the individual strengths of each member on your salon and spa team. Under this style, a leader also focuses on strategies that help the team to work better together.

Rather than forcing all employees to focus on similar skills and goals, you can build a team where each individual focuses on their strengths. In the end, this leadership is useful since it creates strong teams that can communicate well and embrace each other’s skills.

In most cases, this leadership style works well in the salon and spa industry, having in mind that you are hiring different people for their various skills.

Which leadership style is most effective?

Salon and spa leadership is a fluid practice. Salon managers are always changing and improving to help the company grow. So which leadership style do you chose?

Be visionary, mix up directive with a pinch of participative to motivate teams. When some employees seem to be struggling, you can coach them until they learn. The perfect leadership style does not exist but having a bit of each depending on the situation will help you in the long run.

A salon and spa leadership program will help you understand the different dynamics of the salon and spa industry. Contact us today on 1-844-94-STYLE for more information on our Salon and Spa Leadership program.

Health and Style Institute offers multiple cosmetology programs, including a Makeup Artistry program. Do you think you want to join the beauty industry? Here are five reasons to become a makeup artist.

1. Opportunities are Endless

The great thing about makeup artistry is that you can work anywhere. With a job in makeup artistry, the whole world is open to you. You can work anywhere because makeup artists are needed everywhere. If you want to work in California on movie and production sets, you can. If you want to live in New York and work with brides on their wedding day, you can. The opportunities are endless.

2. You’re in Demand

With the beauty industry always growing, there will always be a demand for makeup artists. If you become a makeup artist, you will never have to worry about not being able to find work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the beauty industry is expected to grow 8% from 2018 to 2028 – faster than the national average.

3. There is Always Room for Growth

Makeup artists don’t live routine lifestyles. Each season brings new trends so you constantly have the ability to grow. As soon as boredom kicks in, then you can develop your skills and learn something new. While it is common to have very simple jobs at the beginning, such as doing someone’s makeup for a dance or special event, you can eventually grow into the higher-paying jobs. If you put all your effort into bettering your skills, you could even get access to doing the makeup of celebrities.

4. You Can Always Be Creative

Makeup artists have the freedom to be as creative as they want. You can choose what you want to specialize in. Weddings and special occasions, photo shoots, TV and movie productions, the options are endless. Each model is a fresh new canvas that allows you to express yourself as an artist.

5. Good Income

As a makeup artist, you have control over how much money you can make. The longer you’re working, the better your portfolio will be. This shows the type of work you can do and how experienced you are. If you network and communicate your business with any and all potential clients, you will always have work – meaning you can always get paid.

The career opportunities are endless, but they have one thing in common, clients. In order to have a successful business you need to be able to market yourself or your salon and spa in order to gain new clients.

The marketing world is changing every day. As a salon and spa owner, it is not enough just to deliver the best salon services, you also have to let people know you offer the best services. So how should you market your salon and spa?

Make Sure You Are Visible

Besides word-of-mouth, the quickest way to gain more clients is to make yourself visible online. Searching for products and services is shifting to online platforms like Yelp and Google and salon and spas rank highly on these listing sites. So, if you have not set up or claimed your listings, it is time to do so. It’s very simple. All you have to do is have a Gmail account.

How Does a Listing Work?

Remember the last time you Googled something? The chances are that you selected one out of the first three options Google offered. Listing sites work the same way. If your spa or salon ranks highly on the listings, you will receive more views, which means more customers.

Remember to provide as much information as possible about your business with high-quality photos of your business in order to rank highly. Social proof goes a long way and positive ratings from previous clients will help bring in more potential clients.

Create a Website

Having a website is crucial for any business. A good website is the heart of all your marketing. A good website will allow you to be open 24/7 for both new and existing clients. Your website is also the first impression you have with new clients.

Website building platforms like WordPress and Wix make it possible for anybody to set up a professional-looking website.

You can also use your website to accept online bookings, give free hair styling tips, display your work or send our monthly newsletters to your loyal customers. All these functions of your website will help you reach a broader market and come off as a professional.

Optimize on Social Media

Majority of people today have a social media account of some sort. Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok – and there are new platforms being created every day. This makes social media a factor you cannot overlook when planning to market your spa or salon successfully.

Different social media platforms also have different uses. For example, Instagram and Pinterest are visual platforms where you can post pictures of your work. However, if you plan to share a few words or tips, Facebook is more suitable. Using the right social media platform allows you to reach a broader market, which means more customers.

Health and Style Institute’s Salon and Spa Leadership Program

Marketing your salon and spa can be tricky. However, with the right marketing mix, everything is doable. To become a salon and spa leader, you need to develop your skills and learn as much as you can about the industry. That is why Health and Style Institute’s Salon and Spa Leadership program could be a perfect fit for the next step in your career! Within the beauty industry and makeup design world, there are several types of makeup artists who specialize in different fields or create beauty looks for certain kinds of clients. Each type of makeup artist has unique skills in makeup artistry that help them excel in their chosen career and beauty genre. If you are embarking on a makeup artist education or are wondering what makeup artist specialties are out there, then read below to explore five types of makeup artists.

Cinematic

Makeup artists who work in the cinematic field of beauty create makeup looks for television and films. On the television side, makeup artists can work on television shows, doing the makeup of actors and actresses or can work in the news world where they do the makeup of on-air personalities or anchors. Usually, to work in these fields you need a mix of makeup skills, including basic makeup artistry skills to create everyday looks and FX makeup skills, if you’re working on shows or films that include fantasy, sci-fi or horror elements.

Wedding

A very lucrative field of makeup is the wedding industry. Makeup artists in this realm of beauty offer makeup services to brides and bridal parties. The journey of becoming a cosmetologist starts with Health and Style Institute. This is the place you get to learn the fundamentals of styling, permanent waving, manicuring, makeup and all other skills you need to become a professional. Having worked as a cosmetologist for some years now, I can assure you that it’s enjoyable, rewarding and very fulfilling.

To become a cosmetologist, the States of North Carolina and Georgia require you to enroll for a cosmetology program that takes 1500 clock hours – with the first 300 hours spent in class. After successful completion and a lecturer’s recommendation, you are allowed to proceed to the adaptive stage where you start practicing on guests in the student’s salon. The creative phase test is the last stage where you sit for your final exams. As a licensed cosmetologist, you can now work in the salon and spa industry. I am a practicing cosmetologist, and my journey has been so exciting. I have learned many valuable things that no one ever told me.

1. I Am Very Creative

Generally, cosmetology is an industry that is made of creative minds. From the way you apply makeup on a client’s face to the way you create an elaborate braid, everything is out of creativity. I had no idea that I had such a creative mind until I started my cosmetology program. I was worried if I could master even the basic things a cosmetologist needs to know. To my surprise, at the end of my course, I was that one person who wanted to try every trending style. I even had my own ideas in mind that I wanted to work on.

2. It’s What I Am Cut Out For

Who could have thought that one day I could fall in love with styling hair? I had never even given much attention to my own, let alone someone else’s. Today, when my clients look at themselves in the mirror and smile, my heart melts with joy. I know they are happy with my work and this gives me so much satisfaction. I pride myself in meeting my client’s expectation. If you love to make people smile and enjoy being appreciated, then you should consider becoming a cosmetologist.

3. I Will Make Lifetime Friends

I met my friend Emma a few months into my cosmetology program and this lady has stood by me through all times. Who knows? You, too, could meet lifetime friends at Health and Style Institute as you commence your journey of becoming a cosmetologist. Your noisy classmate could be the person you will be calling every time you feel like the world is falling apart. Of course, making friends will not end here. As a cosmetologist, you interact with so many clients, some of whom may end up being perfect friends too. When you go the extra mile to make your clients feel important and cared for, you truly connect with them and that is what hatches friendship.

4. I Have Freedom

I always knew I wanted a flexible job that could allow me some free time to go about my personal life. Cosmetology careers are quite flexible. Whether you are a barber, hairstylist or esthetician, you can often choose your own hours. I am not forced to adhere to work schedules that I do not like and I’ve always had the freedom to choose where I want to work.

5. No Boredom

If you are that person who finds doing repetitive tasks mundane like me, then cosmetology is a beautiful escape. The beauty industry is among the sectors that are constantly changing. You will always see a new hairstyle, a new way to apply makeup, some modern art on nails and so on. Every day comes with something new to try.

Health and Style Institute offers a Salon and Spa Leadership program that provides advanced courses in esthetics, makeup artistry, salon business administration and management. If you have decided to make your dream a reality and open a business centered around the beauty industry, here are eight skills that will make you a successful salon and spa owner.

1. Stay Independent

Even when it comes to advice from your closest friends and family members, it is important to remember that this is your salon, and it is there to make a dream come true. Continue to stay independent and listen to yourself.

2. Approach Everything with Passion

Passion is what makes you get up every morning and continue your business in the salon and spa industry. It is why you decided to enter into a cosmetology career in the first place. As a successful salon and spa owner, you will need to bring passion to everything that you do.

3. Learn to Delegate

Part of being a salon and spa owner is having a schedule that is just jam-packed. You will need to have people that you can rely on to do their jobs. Split large tasks into smaller, more easily manageable ones.

4. Be Able to Bounce Back

As a licensed cosmetologist, you have probably already figured out that having a tough skin and being resilient are both necessary for a cosmetology career. When owning your own salon or spa you might encounter many setbacks, but it is always important to learn from them and grow.

5. Never Stop Learning

It is important when owning a salon and spa to never stop learning. The beauty industry is constantly changing. You should always be scouring the latest styles and never cease to amaze and satisfy your customers. If you’re keeping up with the trends or even ahead of the trends, your customers will keep coming back.

6. Look into New Forms of Promotion

While advertising your services through advertisements in the newspaper or through yellow page ads is a tried and tested method for successfully promoting your business, you also want to look into new forms of promotion. Establishing a web presence for your brand can open you up to a whole new clientele.

7. Be Confident

Everything that you do, do it with a positive and confident mindset. Confidence will show in your face and your posture, making an impression on all who do business with you. Remain confident and you’ll continue to be a successful salon and spa owner.

8. Keep Things Neat and Tidy

Your salon or spa is dealing with some pretty sensitive issues to do with the human body, so a certain amount of order is expected. Not only will organization come in handy as a licensed cosmetologist, but as a business owner to juggle all the aspects of your life.

Health and Style’s Salon and Spa Leadership Program

Many of these successful salon and spa owner skills can also have a beneficial impact on your life apart from your business. These eight skills will make you a successful salon and spa owner. Are you ready to maximize your potential in the salon and spa industry? Then Health and Style’s Salon and Spa Leadership program is for you. Contact Health and Style Institute at 1-844-94-STYLE for more information on our Salon and Spa Leadership program.

You need to acquire additional skills to ensure you land and maintain as many clients as you can. A good reputation is vital to help boost your career to a whole new level. Here are 8 skills every Cosmetologist should master:

Innovativeness and creativity

Cosmetology Education

Good customer service

Time management

Good grooming habits

Trend Awareness

Physically fit

Familiarity with products

Empathy and listening skills

Interpersonal skills

Innovativeness and Creativity

Beauty is an art that requires creativity. Always be on the lookout for new styles to incorporate in your work. Customers are going to turn to you when they have a picture of the exact hairstyle they want.

Cosmetology Education

While each state varies on specific requirements, earning your state-license is a requirement for all states. Health and Style Institute will help you learn the basics – hair cutting, styling, coloring, makeup, skin care therapy. This is essential for any Cosmetologist.

Good Customer Service

Cosmetologists need to be likable. It is nearly impossible to style hair or apply makeup with a bad attitude. Customers need someone who is approachable and will not mind sharing tips on how to maintain your beauty. This is also how you’ll keep your customer’s coming back. Returning customers are worth a lot more than new customers.

Time Management

You also need to be versatile in your work. Usually, you’ll be the one scheduling your own appointments, but some salons have someone else schedule your appointments. You’ll need to learn when it’s time to get down to business.

Good Grooming Habits

Good grooming habits is another skill every Cosmetologist should master. Even if you don’t style, cut or color your own hair, most customers just assume you do it yourself. Remaining well-groomed and keeping up with the fashion and hairstyle trends is essential for Cosmetologists.

Trend Awareness

Today, cosmetology is one of the fastest-growing industries. It is filled with the latest trends, most of which keep changing with the seasons. You will need to update yourself through research and attend classes to keep abreast of emerging trends. This will help you to learn the new skincare and makeup products that are currently in the market.

Physically Fit

You will be working on your feet almost every day, which requires you to be physically fit. Always take care of your wellbeing before attending to your clients.

Familiarity With Products

Your clients need to be enlightened on the type of products being used to develop trust in you. Take your time to study the variety of products that are sold in beauty shops. Feel free to share the advantages and disadvantages of each product with your clients.

Empathy and Listening Skills

A lot of people have gone to the same hairstylist for years and would never think about changing. Those are the successful cosmetologists because they have built an amazing rapport with their clients to get them to come back – they’re not being ‘fake’ either. They genuinely care about their customers. Having amazing listening skills and showing empathy is crucial for any Cosmetologist.

Interpersonal Skills

People tend to trust their intuition better than what they see. If you do not have a great personality, they will shun your services.

Being able to deliver perfectly toned skin with only a few products and a brush is a talent that most women do not have. And it is a talent that must be capitalized and trained on. Where do you even get makeup training? How do they deliver makeup training? If everything from basic Halloween makeup to beautifully flawless bridal/wedding makeup interests you, it’s possible that Health and Style Institute’s Makeup Artistry program is a great career path for you. But what are the makeup artistry skills you’ll learn at Health and Style Institute?

Special FX

What is special effects makeup used for? A good example is in movies when there is someone gravely injured or when they make someone who is young look old. That is special effects makeup. For the most part, special effects makeup artists will work in the movie making and theatre scene to provide their makeup services.

Airbrush

Airbrush makeup is a very ‘beginners’ technique that plays into many of the other techniques as well. When training to use a makeup airbrush, you are just training in the basic techniques required to make amazing makeup and spray it on. It can be used from everything from fancy dress up makeup to Halloween or even special effects.

Contouring

Contouring is all the rage right now. Contouring is a specific beauty makeup technique that darkens certain areas of the skin as well as lightning others to make a more beautiful face and stronger chin line.

Men and Children Makeup

Makeup for men and children is another technique you will learn at Health and Style Institute. Doing makeup for men and children is a little more difficult because it must be done so it looks extremely natural. These makeup artists work in the movie and big screen industry. Makeup is used in this industry to reduce camera glare on the skin.

Retail Makeup

Retail makeup is an interesting piece of the program. This is something that most people don’t think about. Retail makeup is the application of makeup for marketing purposes – used in the people who are on commercials, in ads, magazines, on billboards and any other promotional/marketing product.

Eyelashes

Eyelashes deserve their own segment in the beauty industry program because it is a difficult piece of doing makeup but is also very important. Having healthy and beautiful eyelashes can change everything in the look of anyone that you are practicing your makeup skills on.

Lighting Techniques

Lighting techniques are also a very important part of makeup. It really doesn’t matter if you have the most beautiful makeup in the room if the lighting isn’t right, the photos are still not going to turn out as well. The overall makeup design works in conjunction with the lighting.

… And More

You will also learn about Color Theory, Sponge and Brush Techniques, Foundation and Blush Application, Lip Design, Prosthetics, Primers, Safety and Sanitation, Camouflaging, High Definition Techniques, and so much more.

Health and Style Institute Makeup Artistry Program

Health and Style Institute is dedicated to ensuring students have a wide variety of educational materials available to them while attending classes – including a makeup artistry kit – in which they will keep, even upon completion of the program.
What is Makeup Artistry?

Makeup artists are typically referred to as a professional who consults with clients on their preferences when it comes to makeup design. A person in this profession will create unique looks per client based on their complexion, skin type, eye color, hair color or even from what they are wearing (perhaps a wedding dress). Consultations range based on each occasion or event and require makeup artists to be strategic and skilled to create custom looks with a range of color palettes and products to best suit each client. Below we’ve listed the traits and qualities of successful makeup artists.

Interpersonal Skills & Active Listening

A successful makeup artist should have a welcoming personality and attentive listening skills. A makeup artist will need to work with each client individually to enhance their facial features using makeup artistry skills. Listening to each clients’ likes and dislikes when it comes to different products. If a client wants bright red lipstick but it is not complementary to their skin tone, they will have to find the balance of satisfying the customer while creating the perfect look. Most successful makeup artists have practiced and mastered their interpersonal skills as well as mastered the art of active listening.

Staying Flexible

Flexibility is a key factor when working with clients and you will find that this quality will attribute to a successful career. There are times when clients will not want to budge on certain techniques being used to create a look, and this is okay. A successful makeup artist will work with the inflexible clients and become flexible to their demands while critically thinking of a way to accomplish the desired result.

Adaptability

The beauty industry is known to be fast-moving and ever-changing. Learning how to adapt is important when considering how a makeup artist reaches long-term success. Adapting to change is an important trait to have as a makeup artist. Continuously learning new techniques, keeping up with trends, and staying passionate will only help you on your quest to become successful in this field.

Efficiency & Time Management

Often you’ll be in a time crunch with your clients. They’re about to go on set or walk down the aisle. Time management is a crucial quality to have as a makeup artist. You will find that with the motivation and focus to work diligently through stressful situations or tight deadlines, while still consistently delivering a great outcome will result in positive feedback. Remain in control of the situation to keep the client’s calm and stress-free.

As the demand for hairstylist services continues to grow, the demand for cosmetology instructors will too. Here are five steps on how to become a cosmetology instructor:

Enroll in Health and Style Institute’s Cosmetology Program

Attain your Cosmetology Certification

Gain experience

Obtain a Teacher Training Certificate from Health and Style Institute

Apply for a job as a Cosmetology Instructor

1. Enroll in Health and Style Institute’s Cosmetology Program

The first step to becoming a cosmetology instructor is to complete Health and Style Institute’s Cosmetology Program. While you must attend a cosmetology program to receive your certification, a prestigious cosmetology program is important. The cosmetology program at Health and Style Institute consists of extensive instruction and practical experience in hair cutting, hair coloring, permanent waving, customer service, personal appearance and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, business ethics and more. Rather than concentrating only on the basic skills needed to pass the state board licensing exam, Health and Style Institute provides a well-rounded lifestyle education.

2. Attain your Cosmetology Certification

All states have different cosmetology certification requirements. The cosmetology state board exam is the test you will have to take to obtain your cosmetology license. The majority, if not all, states require that you pass an exam before you can obtain your license. Health and Style Institute prepares you with the knowledge and skills to pass the state board exam.

3. Gain Experience

After obtaining your cosmetology certification, next is to gain experience. It’s hard to allow a new cosmetologist to teach another new student. Real-life experience is going to play a crucial role in your career to becoming a cosmetology instructor. Working in a salon for a few years can help you gain the experience needed for an instructor position.

4. Obtain Teacher Training Certification from Health and Style Institute

Once you have the experience, you’ll need to obtain instructor training. Health and Style’s Teacher Training program prepares students with all the fundamentals of providing cosmetology instruction in licensed public or private cosmetology schools. Instructional methods used are hands-on projects, step-by-step methods, group activity coordination and much more. Upon successful completion of this program, you will be awarded a Teacher Training certificate and will be prepared to take the state licensure exam.

5. Apply for a job as a Cosmetology Instructor

At last, all the hard work is about to pay off! When applying for an instructor position they will look at your certifications, your experience as a cosmetologist and the skills you have acquired.

1. Communication Skills

A good leader relates and interacts with people genuinely. The employees feel appreciated when they interact freely. The salon and spa manager should be an active listener, engaging and possess the ability to build meaningful working relationships with both employees and customers.

2. Goal-Oriented

An outstanding salon and spa manager should be a visionary; an important leadership trait is to set both short and long terms goals for their salon. These goals are designed to motivate the staff while driving the success of the enterprise. A strong leader sets daily, weekly and monthly targets. They also set revenue targets while working hard to reduce the expenses and maintaining the cost of the sales.

3. Business Knowledge

A salon and spa manager should have a general understanding of how a business runs and thrives. You don’t have to be an expert in entrepreneurship because no one ever opened a business (of any kind) knowing “it all,” but general business knowledge will help tremendously in the long run.

4. Planning

The success of a salon and spa business is positively correlated with the plans of the manager. A great leader documents the plans of the spa or salon, including the visions, core values, market analysis and strategies.

5. Passionate

True leaders are passionate about their work. They can create a unique and comfortable working environment for employees without a blink of an eye. Being passionate means they have enthusiastic enjoyment for what they are doing.

6. Flexible

Being a great leader means being adaptable and flexible when tough situations arise. One should also be open to new ideas and possibilities. Leadership involves the willingness to bring fresh ideas that will bring success to the business.

7. Relentless Improvement

Leaders understand that perfection is a myth. They help their staff in bringing new ideas and strategies while bringing overall improvement to the salon and spa business.

8. Ability to Delegate Duties and Empower

Outstanding leaders delegate tasks among the subordinate staff and will often reward them. The leader ensures the team has the resources and strongly supports them to achieve their objectives. Along with that, the salon and spa leader should show they fully trust the staff without micromanaging them.

9. Creative and Innovative

Creativity is the mother of innovation, right? Any great leader attracts great minds that bring fresh ideas to the business. The leader tries to think outside the box and can see the big picture.

10. Team Player

Salon and spa leaders know that it’s hard to succeed and run a successful business without their employees. Being a team player means you’re not only looking out for yourself, but you’re also making sure your employees are taken care of.

The cosmetologist needs to be inspired by the outfit to make equally excellent makeup that will not change in different lighting – like on a runway.

Brand Director

A brand director may not work in a salon or with hair all day, but their job is equally important. A brand director leads the creative direction, imagery and vision of a beauty company or brand. They must be fashion-forward, inventive and bold as they are the ones who come up with hairstyles, colors and techniques they expect will be on trend for the coming season.

Blow Dry Specialist

Blow Dry Specialists focus on one thing: performing awesome blow dry’s on clients. This is a very scientific area of cosmetology and requires the cosmetologist to be well rounded and well educated on all types of hair.

Unique Salons

When you think of cosmetology salons you think the classic hair and nail salons. However, did you know that there are many other types of salons out there that desperately need stylists. Hospitals, hospice centers and nursing homes all typically operate a salon type facility for their patients. This salon setting will allow you to practice cosmetology that you love while making the elderly or sick still feel amazing.

Beauty Writer

If you love being a cosmetologist, but also enjoy fashion, then consider sharing your knowledge and becoming a beauty writer. This cosmetologist shares their knowledge of the entire industry and makes money via a blog or other print.

Beauty Consultant

A beauty consultant helps customers choose the right beauty products for their skin-type, age, lifestyle and personal appearance. They usually work in department stores working with a specific cosmetic company.

Instructor

If you are a licensed cosmetologist and if you have a natural knack for teaching and interacting with others then you may consider becoming a cosmetologist instructor. Becoming an instructor only requires a little more education – Health and Style Institute offers a Teacher Training Program.

You don’t have to work in a salon all day if you’ve obtained your cosmetology license. There are many unique jobs that cosmetologists qualify for. If you have any additional questions on our Cosmetology program, contact Health and Style today at 1-844-94-STYLE.

Communication & Active Listening

Interacting with clients, actively listening to what they are wanting and making them feel like they’re being heard is extremely important. Making clients feel that they matter is a sure-fire way to get them to come back. Returning customers can often make you more money than obtaining new clientele.

Detail Oriented

An esthetician must be detail-oriented and efficient. You should be observing the skin and asking questions at the beginning of a spa treatment, so you are able to customize their treatment. If you have a knack for the fine details, becoming an esthetician may be a great career option for you.

Familiarity with a Large Array of Services

Business Attitude

As an esthetician, it is important to have a business woman/man mindset. Know how to sell your products and services, always be personable and answer questions honestly. Sell products you personally and honestly believe in. This will keep clients coming back.

Creativity

In order to stand out in the sea of all other estheticians, you must have a creative side! There is nothing worse than a boring esthetician that won’t take chances and try something new. Color outside the lines.

Do you think you have the skills that make a great esthetician? Great! It’s time to contact Health and Style Institute today at 1-844-94-STYLE to learn more information about our Skin Care Therapy Program.

Unfortunately, many, if not most, spa owners and salon management teams experience a lot of salon and spa staff turnover. It is not that salon and spa employees dislike working in the salon and spa industry that drives them away, rather salon and spa employees tend to leave because they are unmotivated by the salon leadership to do a good job and stay at a job. Continuously having employee turnover in the salon and spa industry does not reflect well on the spa leadership. It is vital for salon and spa leadership teams to learn how to motivate employees to create a better salon and spa business atmosphere and keep as many employees as possible for a longer period. Below are 7 tips for how to motivate employees in your salon and make the workplace more positive in general.

Create the culture that you want in your Salon and Spa

Check all the different personalities with your Salon and Spa

Keep everyone involved in the decision making

Schedule regular one-on-one meetings

Reward good work and behaviors

Friendly competition never hurt anyone

Invest in their development

1. Create the culture that you want in your Salon and Spa

As the salon and spa leadership, it is up to you to make sure you have a clearly defined culture within your business. This does not just mean that you write down something nice on your website and call it your culture, creating a culture requires you to create and define the mission of your salon and define what your shared values will be among the owner, leadership, and employees. The best way to create your culture and stick to it is by involving the whole staff in the process. When your employees feel as though they are a part of the process, they are more likely to embrace it and stay motivated to keep it a great working culture that everyone enjoys and benefits from

2. Check all the different personalities within your Salon and Spa

Every single person that works with you is going to have a different personality and will respond to how you do things in a different way. In order to motivate all your team members, it is important to learn what their personality is like, what type of motivation they respond too, and what type of motivation completely shuts them down. This will dictate how you do certain things and will help you ensure that you have a little bit of everything to help keep everyone’s interest peaked.

3. Keep everyone involved in the decision making

No one likes being told what to do, when to do it, or how things are going to be without having any voice in the matter. Micromanaging your employees is the fastest way to de-motivate them. Keep your employees involved in your decisions, ask their opinion on what the salon can do better, and how you can make their spa job easier. Hearing them out and following suggestions will make them feel as though their voices matter- a sure-fire way to make them feel motivated to work hard for you.

4. Schedule regular one-on-one meetings

An important thing to do to keep up morale and make your employees feel heard is to schedule regular meetings with each person individually. Talk with them about their concerns, what salon and spa services they are struggling to provide, how they think they are excelling and what ideas they have for the salon or spa. Doing this will make them excited that you are listening to their concerns and taking their career growth seriously. Employees who feel heard are more likely to be motivated to work for you.

5. Reward good work and behaviors

You don’t have to reward people with huge raises or bonuses every time you catch them doing something good. While money certainly plays a large role in rewards, you can also do things like giving them a salon tool that they’ve been wanting, letting them go home early for a week without missing pay, etc. When your employees know that their work may lead to a reward, big or small, they are more likely to be motivated to do their best.

6. Friendly competition never hurt anyone

Research shows that people who are competing against their peers or coworkers in a friendly competition are more likely to be motivated. It is important to emphasize the friendly part of the competition, so the salon employees don’t get caught up in an individualistic culture.

7. Invest in their development

Salon workers are in a profession where techniques are ever-changing and new trends are always coming out. Investing in your employees and getting them the training, they need to stay on top of trends will show them that you truly care about their careers and will motivate them to do their best for you.

Salon and Spa Leadership at Health and Style Institute

The Salon and Spa employees are vital to salon owners. After all, with no employees, there is no business. Motivating Salon and Spa Employees is the trick you need to keep your staff happy and creative. Health and Style Institute offers a Salon and Spa Leadership program to give you a head start on creating the business you’ve been dreaming of.
It’s wintertime — a season of colder temperatures, longer nights, and fun holiday festivities. When it comes to skincare, winter isn’t all fun and games. Cold gusts of wind and running the heat to banish the cold indoors takes a toll on our skin, leaving it dry, chapped, and dull.

One of the key elements taught in the cosmetology programs at Health and Style Institute is skin care, so we’ve compiled some simple, effective steps you can take to save your skin from the winter blues.

Save Your Skin with These Winter Care Tips

Turn Down the Heat

It seems counter-intuitive, because there’s nothing like a steaming hot shower or bath on a cold winter day, but hot water dries out your skin. Turning down the temperature (especially when washing your face and hands) will go a long way to preserving your skin’s natural oils.

Moisturize!

Cold temperatures outside and dry air inside means your skin needs moisturizing more than ever during the winter months. Look for a smart formula that has skin nourishing ingredients, such as oatmeal, shea butter, and oils. Keep a small bottle of lotion in your bag so you can moisturize on the go, and don’t forget to lather up after showering and before going to bed.

Stay Hydrated

Winter is the perfect time to settle in with a cozy cup of tea or hot cocoa, but don’t forget that your skin needs water to stay hydrated and healthy. Along with your other beauty routines, take care of your body from the inside out by drinking plenty of water.

Take Care of Your Skin This Winter with These Tips

Eat Smart

In addition to drinking more water, you can also eat foods with high water content, such a watermelon, apples, oranges, tomatoes, and zucchini. Be sure you’re getting enough vitamin C, which fights off free radicals and supports the production of collagen and elastin — essential for radiant, healthy skin. For an added boost of skin-smoothing protection, consider adding more healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids to your diet, such as fish, nuts, and avocados.

Use Sunscreen

Hats, gloves, and scarves aren’t the only way to protect your skin from cold temperatures, rain, snow, and gusts of wind. Even on the coldest day of the year, it’s important to remember your sunscreen. Just because the temperatures are cold doesn’t mean the sun’s UV rays aren’t damaging your skin! Pick a sunscreen that contains moisturizers, and you’ll be doing your skin a double favor.

Change Your Cleanser

When it’s cold out, traditional soaps and cleaners will further dry out your skin. Switch to a soap-free, cream-based cleanser that helps your skin retain its moisture.

Exfoliate!

Just like using sunscreen, exfoliating is something that should be done year-round. Avoid dry, dull, and flaky skin by exfoliating with an oil-based scrub. Be sure to follow with moisturizer to lock in radiant, smooth skin.

With the right products and treatment, you can have healthy, moisture-rich skin all winter long. If you really want to give your skin a radiant winter boost, contact us to schedule a facial with one of our future skin care professionals.
